Alexis Kuhr

By working in opposition to traditional conceptions of pattern as merely decorative and culturally neutral ornamentation, I create work that examines and calls attention to the patterns and surfaces that enhance our daily lives, while marking and defining our class and often our gender as well. I believe that Formalist painting finds its clearest antithesis in the decorative, and whereas Abstract Expressionism connotes the universal and timeless; mass-produced pattern may suggest humble economies and a sense of the transitory.

In my most recent work, I combine elaborate linear grids with found pattern to elevate the commonplace and to make transient the absolutes of geometric form.
